Volunteering at the Hyde Observatory is open to all members of the general public regardless of your membership in the Prairie Astronomy Club (though many members do volunteer). If you have an interest in volunteering at Hyde, please see Hyde Observatory’s Lincoln Parks & Recreation page and download the Volunteer and Background Check forms (located on the lower-right corner of the page).
Commitments vary, but are typically one Saturday night every one to two months.
Some knowledge of Astronomy is preferred, but an interest is really all that’s required. Even if you’re unfamiliar with many of the topics in Astronomy, there will always be an experienced volunteer available to help. A short training session before your first shift will take place where experienced volunteers will walk you through the common tasks of using the scope and teaching the public.
